Germany selected its entry in the foreign-language Oscar race.
Variety says, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's hard-hitting feature debut The Lives of Others, about East Germany's dreaded Stasi and its terrifying system of domestic spying, has been selected.
The Lives of Others, which nabbed seven German Film Awards this year, including best pic and director, examines the Stasi's chilling practice of domestic surveillance and the affect it has on a successful East Berlin playwright and his actress lover in the final years of the German Democratic Republic.
