As the international market bounces back from 2005's Year of the Slump, Sony Pictures Releasing International became the third major distributor to pass the $1 billion mark at the overseas boxoffice, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The SPRI achievement was announced Thursday by Jeff Blake, chairman of worldwide marketing and distribution at the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group.
20th Century Fox International hit the industry benchmark June 9, and Buena Vista International, the overseas distribution arm of the Walt Disney Co., followed on the weekend of July 16. It was the fastest time ever for each of the companies to individually hurdle the $1 billion finish line.
The main contributor to SPRI's international results so far this year was The Da Vinci Code, which has taken in more than $535 million since its release in May. The mystery thriller, the 10th-biggest film ever released internationally as of July 23, is SPRI's highest-grossing film of all time.
Perhaps another sign of the industry's theatrical comeback might be been in the $1 billion reached in late July by United International Pictures, the overseas distributor for Paramount, Universal and DreamWorks. UIP's international gross mostly was aided by King Kong, Mission: Impossible III and Over the Hedge. |
